THE Dragons are in mourning after the tragic death of popular official and former player Robert Stone, who passed away yesterday after a tenacious battle with brain tumours at the age of 49.

Stone, the St George executive officer, played for the club from 1974-85 and won premierships in all three grades, including the historic 1977 triumph over Parramatta which required a grand final replay.

The rampaging forward scored the first try of the 22-0 replay thumping victory and the distance he ran grew longer every year thereafter.

"He ran about 30-40 metres but Stoney would say it would have been about 80," said Dragons legend Craig Young about his former team-mate, fellow club official and friend.

"He was very, very passionate about the club. He had the knack of making you feel a part of the place - that was one of his strengths, generating team spirit and loyalty."

Stone represented NSW off the bench in the memorable first Origin at Lang Park in 1980 and retired five years later with 170 top grade games in his 281 for the club - third on the all-time list behind Norm Provan (283) and Billy Smith (297).

Five years ago he rejoined the Dragons as an official and was the driving force behind the rejuvenation of the dilapidated Kogarah Oval into Oki Jubilee Stadium, earning the nickname "Bob the Builder" for his hands-on approach.

Diagnosed with a brain tumour nearly two years ago, he fought a brave battle.

In his annual report last year, the St George life member wrote: "I would like to thank all those friends and workmates who have supported me through a most difficult time. Your support has given me the strength to carry on."

St George Illawarra chief executive Peter Doust described Stone as "a truly unique individual with so many wonderful qualities".

"He was inspiring, committed, passionate, tough, funny and caring - a friend to all who had the pleasure of knowing him."

Stone is survived by wife Anne, daughters Melissa and Belinda, and son Michael.

His funeral will be held at Engadine's St John Bosco Church tomorrow at noon and the Dragons will wear black armbands on Friday against the Cowboys at Townsville.
